What better way to explore our
wide array of coffees then to hear about them from Sir
Edmund Moore, the inspiration for what we now call Kiva Han
Coffee.
Who is Sir Edmund Moore, you ask? Sir Edmund, was born in
the year 1923, in Kilrush Ireland. Current residence? He was
a traveler of the world and lived his final years in the
most beautiful location in Europe, Interlaken Switzerland.
Sir Edmund, while traveling one day in the ancient city of
Istanbul, the history of Kiva Han began. Nestled between
Europe and Asia, this city has a mingling of both traditions
and cultures. While walking down a winding, quiet,
cobblestone street Sir Edmund Moore was directed toward a
little-known piece of history by a man who looked as if he
had the wisdom of the world. Sir Edmund turned around and
gazed upon the original Kiva Han, established in 1471.
There was not much to the shop from the outside, but inside,
oh what splendor. Jars full of the most exquisite coffees
graced the shelves. While enjoying a cup of coffee, Sir
Edmund and a local man began discussing subtle differences
in coffees which give each its own character and flavor.
Sir Edmund was himself a seasoned coffee drinker. Yet, he
was intrigued. After hours of "Coffee Education," Sir Edmund
decided that these secrets could no longer be confined. The
rest of the world should experience the “fineness” in
coffee. Thus began his quest to find the best coffees of the
world.
Today, here in Pittsburgh, we follow Sir Edmund's travels
and benefit from his finds. The new Kiva Han was founded by
Pittsburgher, Ed Wethli. Ed and Kiva Han are dedicated to
providing customers with the highest quality products and
services. We strive for that same quality found in the
1400's at the first coffee bar in history. We hope that you,
like Sir Edmund, will discover and savor and enjoy the
unique experience and atmosphere of Kiva Han Coffee.
